Dr. Angela Douglas is seeking to fill a postdoctoral position to conduct studies on implementing a novel control strategy againstBemisiawhiteflies. The research will design strategies to optimizein-plantaRNAi against the agricultural insect pest,Bemisia tabaci. The efficacy of current methods againstBemisiawhiteflies is poor because of premature degradation of the RNAi molecule by nuclease(s) in the phloem sap or insect gut. The researcher will (1) determine the site of dsRNA degradation: in the plant and/or insect; (2) demonstrate that dsRNA-nuclease protects dsRNA from premature degradation; and (3) obtainin plantaRNAi knockdown of theBemisiasucrase geneST1, with resultant osmotic collapse and death of the insect pest. This proof-of-concept research will make RNAi a genuinely feasible strategy for the sustainable control of phloem-feeding insects, especiallyBemisiapests of cassava subsistence crop in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This is a 12-month appointment which is renewable pending available funding.
Required
Qualifications:
PhD in a biological discipline, expertise in basic molecular methods and both field and lab studies and a proven track record of effective research output.
